A Tiny Jewel of the Rainforest

The Purple Vampire Crab (Geosesarma dennerle) is one of the most eye-catching and popular freshwater crabs in the aquarium hobby. Native to the tropical rainforests of Indonesia, this small semi-terrestrial species enchants keepers with its vibrant purple carapace, glowing orange-to-yellow eyes, and lively behavior. Despite its dramatic appearance, it’s peaceful, curious, and highly active — making it a fascinating species to observe.

Habitat & Care:
Purple Vampire Crabs thrive in a humid, semi-aquatic enclosure that mimics their natural environment — about 70% land and 30% shallow water. A 40-litre (or larger) paludarium with plenty of hiding spots, moss, and smooth rocks is ideal. Maintain a temperature of 24–28 °C and a humidity level around 80%. Clean, dechlorinated freshwater and a secure lid are essential, as these crabs are skilled climbers.

Diet:
Omnivorous by nature, Purple Vampire Crabs enjoy a varied diet of protein-rich foods such as insect larvae, pellets, and freeze-dried bloodworms, balanced with plant-based items like vegetables and leaf litter.

Social yet territorial, they can be kept in small groups if enough space and hiding areas are provided. With the right setup, these brilliant little crabs can live up to 3 years, adding both color and character to your exotic collection.
