Description

The Curious Traveler of the Shoreline

The Hermit Crab (Paguroidea spp.) is one of natureโ€™s most charming and unusual creatures. Unlike true crabs, it protects its soft abdomen by living inside an empty seashell โ€” and as it grows, it searches for new, larger shells to call home. This unique behavior, along with its social nature and playful curiosity, makes Hermit Crabs a captivating pet for both beginners and experienced keepers.

Habitat & Care:
Hermit Crabs thrive in a warm, humid environment that mimics their natural coastal habitat. A terrarium of at least 40 litres with a deep, moist substrate of sand and coconut fibre allows for burrowing. Maintain temperatures between 25โ€“30 ยฐC and humidity levels around 70โ€“80%. Provide both fresh and saltwater pools, as they need access to both for drinking and shell maintenance. Offer a selection of empty shells so they can change homes as they grow.

Diet:
Omnivorous and opportunistic, Hermit Crabs enjoy a varied diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, dried shrimp, seaweed, and high-quality crab food. Calcium sources such as cuttlebone help maintain strong exoskeletons.

Active mostly at night, Hermit Crabs are social animals that do best in small groups. With proper care, they can live up to 10 years or more, providing endless fascination with their gentle movements and curious behavior โ€” a true symbol of the seaโ€™s quiet beauty.
